On Thursday, March 4th, the Photography Museum "The House of Metenkov" opened exhibition "Paris at night" of the XXth century French photographer Brassai.

Brassai (pseudonym of Gyula Halasz) (1899 - 1984) was a Hungarian artist, photographer, sculptor, writer and filmmaker who rose to fame in France. When he was three, his family moved to live in Paris, France. As a young man, Gyula Halasz studied painting and sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest.

Gyulas job and his love of the city, whose streets he often wandered late at night, led to photography. He later wrote that photography allowed him to seize the Paris night and the beauty of the streets and gardens, in rain and mist. Using the name of his birthplace, Gyula Halasz went by the pseudonym "Brassai," which means "from Brasso."

Brassai is a holder of the French National Order of the Legion of Honor (Lуgion d'honneur) and National Award on Photography.

90 black and white photographs of the early 30-ties are exhibited. Author's rights belong to ESTATE BRASSAI-RMN.

The exhibition is prepared by the museum together with The French Republic Consulate General in Russia, the French Republic Culture Center in Moscow and Alliance Francaise in Ekaterinburg within the cultural exchanges of the Year of France in Russia and Years of Russia in France 2010.

The Exhibition runs till March 25.
