Russia's traffic police have proposed new amendments to the traffic rules, declaring war on D-I-Y style xenon lights but making U-turns and overtaking easier.
Under the new amendments, the laws covering how a driver should enter a roundabout will be changed to give right of way to cars coming from the left, as opposed to the current system which gives the right to the car entering.
Also up for a reworking is when drivers can make left-hand turns. If the new regulations are ratified, drivers will be able to make U-turns as long as there is no dividing line on the road.
The traffic police hope this will be the first step in bringing the country's transportation infrastructure into line with European standards, as well as making Russias roads safer.
Russia's drivers appear to welcome moves to update the road infrastructure. However, they are less than thrilled by one of the other changes to the law proposed by the traffic police - the ban of xenon lights, a far brighter version of the standard car headlights. Having uncertified xenon lamps now brings with it a driving ban from between 6 and 12 months.

The expert also seems unconvinced that other laws will make a real difference.
"It's obvious that it's necessary to implement a new law, but I'd like to see more emphasis on improving attitudes on the road. Roundabouts are a great idea, but if drivers continue to block each other and create jams on the road, as happens a lot these days, there is a chance that this can fail, which is a shame," Dozorov added.
The suggested changes to the law are now being looked over by the Ministry of Transport. Then they will be put to the State Duma, which will decide if these proposals will become law.
