Russian investigators have launched an inquiry into an alleged police beating of a pianist Sergey Beloglazov (on photo) in the Ural city of Ekaterinburg.

Sergei Beloglazov's lawyer says a police officer kicked his client after he failed to produce identity documents during a routine check. The lawyer also says Mr Beloglazov, 62, suffered injuries to his hands during the alleged attack on 1 February.

It is the latest in a series of reported incidents involving police.

Mr Beloglazov, a professor of music in the city conservatory, was reportedly stopped by the police officer in the evening of 1 February.

The pianist told Russia's Echo Moskvy radio that he had been beaten on the face and "what is particularly unpleasant, on my hands" after telling the policeman that he did not have any ID documents with him. He said the attack had caused a loss of movements in his hands.

Mr Beloglazov also said the policeman had stolen his money and a mobile phone.
