Rich and self-willed beauty Maritza arrives in her estate; and there she meets and later fall in love in Tassilo, poor steward of her estate. Not so long ago he, rich and well-off young count Endrödy, squandered all his wealth and had to sell family castle and under an assumed name to become a steward of his former own estate, now belonging to countess Maritza… For now she declares about her engagement with Zsupan in order to get rid of bothering fiancés. Charley's Aunt

Opening Night

Charley's Aunt
is a farce in three acts written by Brandon Thomas. It broke all historic records for plays of any kind, with an original London run of 1,466 performances.
Charley's Aunt tells of the extremes to which young men will go to spend time with young women. With a spirit that the entire family can enjoy, mistaken identity, long-lost loves and sweet courtship all collide in the play to form the happiest of possible endings.
Charley's Aunt has become a staple of theatres everywhere since its initial opening in London in 1892. The show's slapstick humor was wildly appreciated, and it was quickly translated into many languages. Until the early 1930s, not a week went by without a performance somewhere in the world. Charley's Aunt has also been produced in radio and television formats, has been the basis for a hit Broadway musical, and has been made into least 10 films.

The Queen of Spades

The Queen of Spades
- an opera by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky. The libretto was first prepared by the composer’s brother Modeste and it is that of the well known story by Pushkin.
Tchaikovsky enjoyed his work on this opera. He wrote as follows to the Grand Duke Constantine: «I composed this opera with extraordinary joy and fervor, and experienced so vividly in myself all that happens in the tale, that at one time I was actually afraid of the specter of the Queen of Spades. I can only hope that all my creative fervors, my agitation, and my enthusiasm will find an echo in the heart of my audiences.»  First performed at St. Petersburg in 1890, this opera soon rivaled Eugene Onegin in popularity.

Start: 6p.m.

Eugene Onegin

Opera by Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky

Tchaikovsky wrote Eugene Onegin in 1878, using a libretto by Konstantin Shilovsky and himself, based on the epic poem by Pushkin. The composer was first drawn to the project by the famous «letter scene», in which Tatyana declares her affections for Onegin. Tchaikovsky provided music for this scene — at least the latter part of it — first and built the rest of the work around it, ultimately producing his most popular opera. If the libretto supplies many opportunities for dramatic scenes, Tchaikovsky's music certainly rises to almost every occasion.

Balzaminov's Wedding

Opening Night

Considered the founder of Russian national drama, Ostrovsky (1823-1886) was the first playwright to depict on the stage the ordinary merchants, government bureaucrats and other middle-class denizens of Moscow and the Volga River region.
Ostrovsky wrote some 50 plays. Together these make up what could be described as a chronicle of the Russian life of the 1840s to 1880s. Balzaminov’s Wedding (1861) presents the story of a poor young government official, Balzaminov, noted neither for his intelligence nor his good looks. With the help of a matchmaker and his mother, he tries to find a rich bride. On the path to fulfilling his dream, Balzaminov gets involved in the most improbable situations.

Russian Style Silk-Screen Decoration

In the 1960's pop artists developed interested not only in the noble way of printing hieroglyphs on textile, but also in the way they were created. Pop art came to Russia later than to some other countries, therefore the art of silk-screen decoration became popular in this country only in 1974. Although first silk-screen decorations made by Russian artists had a success, the art gradually faded away.
