The Opera and Ballet House of Ekaterinburg
Swan Lake by Peter Tchaikovsky
Perhaps the most popular ballet in the world. The ballet «Swan Lake» («Lebedinoye Ozero»-Rus.) was composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky in 1875-1876. Many critics have claimed «Swan Lake» as a national ballet due to fact that a swan is originated from Russian romantic lyric sources. The image of the swan and the very idea of a faithful love are essentially Russian.
Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece is the most revered of classical ballets. Though the exact interpretation of the swan is still uncertain, no one could beat Anna Pavlova’s vanguard performance.

Stage director: Governor’s Award prize-winner Leonid Yakushev
Masterpiece by Alexander Borodin which recounts the campaign of Russian prince Igor Svyatoslavich against the invading Polovtsian tribes in 1185.
One of notable premieres was given by the Opera and Ballet House of Ekaterinburg. Music from the opera has inspired many contemporary composers. Among famous tunes is cover of the Polovtsian dance «Fly away on the wings of the wind».

The play is based on classical stage direction of Lavrovsky.
Considered one of the great Romantic ballets, Giselle is about a simple peasant girl who is betrayed by love. She goes mad and dies of a broken heart. She becomes a ghost and is ordered to destroy the man who caused her pain, although she is still deeply in love with him. The ballet deals with the powerful forces of nature, including forest spirits and death. The second act is referred to as the «white act» because everyone is wearing white. In the end, undying love triumphs over betrayal and death.

Kirill Strezhnev and his colleagues have cooperated with the translator Tamara Skuy for a long time. She successfully translated a number of European operas and musicals that have been staged in Oleg Tabakov's Theatre in Moscow, Lensovet Theatre, and in local theatres in Russia.
The Sverdlovsk Academic Theatre of Musical Comedy continues with «The Italian repertoire» in close collaboration with Tamara Skuy.
Devil&Virgin is a relatively new musical by Armando Trovaioli. It was adopted for the Russian audience and named as «Devil&Virgin,» though in the original it sounds like «If you could turn back time.»

The Sverdlovsk Academic Theatre of Musical Comedy and Budapest State Opera present the world-famous «Gypsy Love.»
In Ekaterinburg the Franz Lehar’s operetta was performed in 1935 for the first time and gained general acceptance in 1990s. Attila Beres shows masterly the mix of drama and comedy in the eternal triangle. Who wins the heart of beautiful Zorika – an ordinary guy who fell in love or a hot gypsy boy?

Première – Alexey Yankovsky presents «The Pillowman» based on famous Irish playwright Martin McDonagh’s play. McDonagh’s plays are extremely popular in Russia. Many of his works – «The Beauty Queen of Leenane», «A Skull in Connemara», «The Lonesome West» and «The Lieutenant of Inishmore» – have been successfully performed in theatres in Moscow, St. Petersburg and Ekaterinburg.

«Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead» is an absurdist, existentialist tragicomedy by English genius Tom Stoppard. The play expands upon the exploits of two minor characters from Shakespeare's Hamlet.
Major themes of the play include existentialism, free will vs. determinism, the search for value, and the impossibility of certainty. As with many of Tom Stoppard's works, the play has a love for cleverness and language. It treats language as a confounding system fraught with ambiguity. Thanks to Stoppard, the play has become as well-known as the original.

The title character – Alexander Amilcar - is a rich Parisian who has had 30 years of being let down in love and friendship. He picked up off the street a loftily disdainful professional actress Eleanor, a middle-aged painter Masha, and a prostitute Virginia.
For 10,000 francs a week, they are to simulate the situation that life has failed to afford him by improvising, to his direction, the behavior of a perfect family. He wants it to look like the real thing…

«The Cherry Orchard» by Anton Chekhov
Comedy in 2 acts
«The Cherry Orchard» describes the lives of a group of Russians, in the wake of the Liberation of the serfs. The nineteenth century offered two important developments to Russia which are manifested in the play. In the 1830's, the railroads arrived, an important step in Russia's move into a more international sphere. More importantly, in February of 1861, Russia's vast population of serfs was liberated for good, bringing a long-awaited social change. These two dimensions, social change and the growing importance of the international community, pervade the play and even drive the plot.
With the changes in the class system, debates about the nature of progress and freedom spring up across Russia, and these questions are reflected in «The Cherry Orchard» as well. The theme of social change is an international theme at the moment when the play was written: countries everywhere, including the United States, were experiencing similar growing pains and similar philosophical debates.
Chekhov's writing style is very pertinent to the population of Russia at this moment. While former aristocrats still patronized the arts, there was also a growing class of less educated, nouveau-rich attending the theater. Chekhov's plays are famous for their simple language, which many hold partly responsible for his popularity. The fact that his play discusses every social class in language that everyone can understand makes his play accessible to people of all backgrounds. It makes high-brow jokes while also being universally comedic.

The Post Cards Exhibition
The Reshetnikov museum hosts post cards exhibition. Among exhibits are rare examples dated back to XVIII-XIX centuries.
The museum is situated in a mansion that was erected in the XIXth century. Fyodor Reshetnikov was born in the family of postman. The museum has the unique exposition «House of the postmaster» that includes household goods, winter sledges, postmaster’s uniform and even a stage-coach of the XIXth century.
The exhibition runs till October 19.

Ekaterinburg Gallery of Modern Art
Contact: Wind and Fire
The exhibition assembled at the Modern Art Gallery in Ekaterinburg under the auspices of the Public Affairs Section of the General Consulate of the United States in Ekaterinburg features art forms that transcend national origin and reveal elemental art.
In «Contact: Wind and Fire», a collection of 28 sculptures and 40 graphics, fifteen international artists lead visitors into the expansive realm of the artistic imagination. Among these fifteen are featured the American-born artists Patricia Goodrich and Ron Keefer, and immigrant artists to the United States. The Russian traditions of modern art are presented with works of the renowned local artists who represent the cream of a dynamic movement in the Ural.
The work of several artists from the Ural region has now been incorporated into the exhibit, which originally opened in Vladivostok in 2008.
The exhibition runs till October 5, Monday.

The Museum of Photography - The House of Metenkov
The Berlin Wall
Photoexhibition: 20 years since the fall of the Wall. The exhibition is organized by the Moscow House of Photography under the auspices of the Moscow City Culture Department and Germany Consulate General in Ekaterinburg.
At the exhibition visitors will enjoy works of the American photographer Anthony Suau who witnessed this historical event of global significance (November 10-14, 1989). 20 years later, Germany, Europe and the whole world look back, in order to look forward. Thanks to the peaceful revolution and the Fall of the Wall, not only were millions of people united: Germany was, too. And the balance between East and West was re-established.

The Ekaterinburg Theatre of Dance presents a dance performance with participation of the Russian and Hungarian dancers. It is the second performance of the Hungarian choreographer Balazs Baranay, the pupil of a famous contemporary dance master Pal Frenak. It’s one of the important culture events in Ekaterinburg due to its unique dance performance, video and sound track.
«We are alarmed by «Hunger», it is evil, pain, but we see also happiness and goodness. We are talking about relationships where hardness and infinite tenderness may be combined. These are contrasts like our whole life» – commented Balazs Baranay.
