For 10,000 francs a week, they are to simulate the situation that life has failed to afford him by improvising, to his direction, the behavior of a perfect family. He wants it to look like the real thing…

«The Cherry Orchard» by Anton Chekhov
Comedy in 2 acts
The Cherry Orchard describes the lives of a group of Russians, in the wake of the Liberation of the serfs. The nineteenth century offered two important developments to Russia which are manifested in the play. In the 1830's, the railroads arrived, an important step in Russia's move into a more international sphere. More importantly, in February of 1861, Russia's vast population of serfs was liberated for good, bringing a long-awaited social change. These two dimensions, social change and the growing importance of the international community, pervade the play and even drive the plot.
With the changes in the class system, debates about the nature of progress and freedom spring up across Russia, and these questions are reflected in The Cherry Orchard as well. The theme of social change is an international theme at the moment when the play was written: countries everywhere, including the United States, were experiencing similar growing pains and similar philosophical debates.
Chekhov's writing style is very pertinent to the population of Russia at this moment. While former aristocrats still patronized the arts, there was also a growing class of less educated, nouveau-rich attending the theater. Chekhov's plays are famous for their simple language, which many hold partly responsible for his popularity. The fact that his play discusses every social class in language that everyone can understand makes his play accessible to people of all backgrounds. It makes high-brow jokes while also being universally comedic.

Ivan Sergeyevich Turgenev was a Russian novelist and playwright. His novel Fathers and Sons is regarded as one of the major works of XIXth century fiction.
Pauline Viardot (her name appears in various forms like Polina Viardo) was a French mezzo-soprano and composer of Spanish descent. Her friend George Sand directing her to Louis Viardot - an author and the director of the Théâtre Italien. Pauline Viardot had a happy and intense family life and her children followed in her musical footsteps. Her marriage did not stop the steady stream of infatuated men.
Ivan Turgenev fell passionately in love with her after hearing her rendition of The Barber of Seville in Russia in 1843. In 1845, he left Russia to follow Pauline and eventually installed himself in the Viardot household, treated her four children as his own, and adored her until he died. She, in turn, critiqued his work and through her connections and social abilities, presented him in the best light whenever they were in public. The exact status of their relationship is still a matter of debate…

Ekaterinburg Museum of Fine Arts
Horst Janssen Exhibition
The German Consulate General, the German Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations (IFA) and the Ekaterinburg Museum of Fine Arts present an exhibition of works of the renowned German artist Horst Janssen, who mainly focused on etchings.
Horst Janssen (1929 - 1995) is regarded as one of the major as well as most prolific German graphic artists of the present. In this IFA exhibition, more than 130 etchings are presented, put together in accordance with chronological and thematic aspects, allowing an understanding of his artistry in this field from the end of the 1950s to the mid-1970's.
Selected works were taken from his two series with the titles Hokusai's Walk and Carneval di Venezia as well as single works from various work periods of this artist. His preferred issues for etchings includes both landscapes and landscape associations, which Janssen combines with plant and animal structures, and his own facial features.
Ekaterinburg is the «last stop» of the IFA - exhibition, that has toured worldwide for 19 years, including calls at major European, Asian and South American cities. In the past 2 years, the exhibition toured in CIS countries, including Belarus, Ukraine and Armenia.

The Museum of Photography - The House of Metenkov
Simple Things
The Museum of Photography The House of Metenkov opened two new exhibitions presenting Sverdlovsk photos of the late Soviet period.
The first one is called Simple Things and it is a still-life show exposing everyday life of the late socialism epoch. At the same time the aim of the exhibition is not to display just trivial objects. Photo designers bring the poetic spiritual atmosphere through the material samples. Masters of photography transfer visitors to the world of symbols and imagination.
The second exhibition demonstrates personal works of Valery Berdugin (1938-2005). It is a result of multiple expeditions taken by the author in 1970s and 1980s throughout Ural region, showing beautiful landscapes from Bashkiria up to the Nether-Polar Urals.
The exhibition runs till October, 2009.

Elections in Ekaterinburg: XVIII-XXI centuries
At the exposition one can learn interesting facts & figures about peculiarities of election campaign at the Ural, electoral rules in XVIII-XIX centuries, interesting facts about local government’s work before and after the Russian Revolution.
Source documents from the Sverdlovsk Region State Archive, photos and even news films are presented.
Among unique display specimen are personal belongings of former City Heads – Simanov, Obukchov, Bichkova and Arkady Chernetsky.

Ekaterinburg Gallery of Modern Art
Contact: Wind and Fire
The exhibition assembled at the Modern Art Gallery in Ekaterinburg under the auspices of the Public Affairs Section of the General Consulate of the United States in Ekaterinburg features art forms that transcend national origin and reveal elemental art.
In Contact: Wind and Fire, a collection of 28 sculptures and 40 graphics, fifteen international artists lead visitors into the expansive realm of the artistic imagination. Among these fifteen are featured the American-born artists Patricia Goodrich and Ron Keefer, and immigrant artists to the United States: Densaburo Oku, Daiske Shintani, Atsuko Shintani, Nikolay Melnikov. Chandor Lafkadio Khassan, and J.C. Sarpong. Together these artists form an artistic community calling themselves Contact.
The Russian traditions of modern art are presented with wors of the following renowned local artists: Mikhail Sajaev, Andrey Antonov, Yuri Krylov, Benjamin Stepanov, Lyubov Alexandrova, Sergey Nastashenko, Vitaliy Volovich, Misha Brusilovskiy, Alexander Alekseyev, Vasiliy Antsiferovy, etc. These artists represent the cream of a dynamic movement in the Ural.
The work of several artists from the Ural region has now been incorporated into the exhibit, which originally opened in Vladivostok in 2008.
The exhibition runs till October 5, Monday.

Norway Blues
Famous Norwegian blues singers Kurt Slevigen&Eirik Bergene give two concerts in Ekaterinburg.
Norwegian Blues master Slevigen has previously played with Bergen Bluesband, Oslo Bluesband and Chicago Bound.
Eirik Bergene is considered one of Norway's finest harmonica players. In fact he is one out of only two professional players in Norway (the other one being legendary Sigmund Groven). Since he first picked up a harmonica in the year 2000, he has developed his technique through extensive stage experience and has gained the approval of great musicians worldwide. In addition to fronting his own band, the Eirik Bergene Band, he has performed with a long line of outstanding musicians such as Knut Reiersrud, Junior Watson, Steinar Albrigtsen, Jørn Hoel, Amund Maarud, Sven Zetterberg, and Norwegian R'n'B queen Winta, among others. In 2005 Bergene was a permanent band member of two-time Norwegian Grammy Award-winner, Vidar Busk.

EverJazz club opens new season at the Ben Hall pub. Jazz lovers and jazz club goers will appreciate highly modern and classic jazz tunes at a new place in a friendly atmosphere of Ben Hall pub.
The music policy is based around the rich and varied live music scene. The Ever Jazz is the first and the only jazz club in Ekaterinburg for lovers of live jazz, improvised music, latin jazz, funky music and dancing. It’s famous for jazz evenings and honored guests from Russia and abroad (Lars Dupler Trio, Germany) who perform classic and modern jazz tunes.
The EverJazz Club providing great jazz tunes has gained national attention for its concerts, open-air events and cooperative concerts with many local arts organizations.
