Volkhonka Theatre opens its 24th theatre season
Le Dîner de Cons
Comedy in 2 acts
Francis Veber's play Le Dîner de Cons was a boulevard play in Paris, and a huge hit. Opening in 1993, it had a run of hundreds of performance.
Pierre Brochant, a famous Parisian publisher, attends a weekly «idiots’ dinner,» where guests, who are prominent Parisian businessmen, must bring along an «idiot» of whom the other invitees can make fun. At the end of the dinner, the evening's champion idiot is selected.
Pierre Brochant manages, with the help of an «idiot scout,» to find a «gem»: François Pignon, a Finance Ministry employee who is crazy about building replicas with matchsticks. Things start to go wrong when Brochant's wife leaves him shortly before François Pignon arrives at his apartment…
Veber's inventiveness is outstanding. He is clearly an inheritor of that greatest of all farce playwrights, Georges Feydeau (1862-1921) whose wild comedies of La Belle Epoque are the funniest imaginable. These are merciless un-cruel satires, splendidly timed and dialogued, minutely plotted, absurdist within realistic frames.

Chekhov referred to The Three Sisters as a "drama," preferring to avoid the more confining labels of either «comedy» or «tragedy,» although later critics have argued for both of those labels. It is one of the four major plays that he wrote at the end of his life. Chekhov was an accomplished fiction writer, one of the most influential short story writers of all time. At the time that his plays were being produced there was some criticism that his dramas too closely resembled the style of fiction. Traditionalists found the action too cramped and the characters too inexpressive, noting that there were too many people on the stage at any one time, doing nothing, for audiences to be able to register the significance of it all. Contrary to expectations, though, Chekhov's plays were very popular in Moscow, where they were staged by the famous Moscow Art Theatre under the direction of Constantin Stanislavsky.
The Three Sisters was the first play that Chekhov wrote specifically for the Moscow Art Theatre, having experienced commercial success in his previous collaborations with the company, The Seagull and Uncle Vanya. Like many of Chekhov's works, it is about the decay of the privileged class in Russia and the search for meaning in the modern world. In the play, Olga, Masha, and Irina are refined and cultured young women in their twenties who were raised in urban Moscow but have been living in a small, colorless provincial town for eleven years. With their father dead, their anticipated return to Moscow comes to represent their hopes for living a good life, while the ordinariness of day-to-day living tightens its hold.

Khanuma by Avksenti Tsagareli (1857-1902), a well-known Georgian comediographer and dramatist.
One of the most interesting pages of Georgian music history is connected with Victor Dolidze's name. He is known as the author of the first Georgian comic opera. This genre determined his creative work. Victor Dolidze was gifted with all the features so essential for a composer and dramatist: talent, temperament, sharp feeling of theatricality, ability to create distinguished musical and scenic characters and situations. He is the first Georgian composer to include humorous, comic and satirical elements into Georgian music. Khanuma is the immortal image of the Tbilisi.

X All-Russian Theatre Festival Realny Teatr (The Real Theatre)
Real Theatre - is the oldest festival tradition in Russia. It traces its roots from 1990 when the first event took place in honor of the 60th Anniversary of The Ekaterinburg Young Spectator's Theatre.
The Real Theatre sets an ultimate mission - to represent the most embracive and state-of-the-art patterns of nowadays theatre, to reveal new trends, both aesthetical and thematic and to assist designers, directors and artists to imbibe these new tendencies for further evolution of theatrical skills. Needless to say, in the Festival program each theatre introduces its best performance of the latest season.

Horst Janssen Exhibition
The German Consulate General, the German Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations (IFA) and the Ekaterinburg Museum of Fine Arts present an exhibition of works of the renowned German artist Horst Janssen, who mainly focused on etchings.
Horst Janssen (1929 - 1995) is regarded as one of the major as well as most prolific German graphic artists of the present. In this IFA exhibition, more than 130 etchings are presented, put together in accordance with chronological and thematic aspects, allowing an understanding of his artistry in this field from the end of the 1950s to the mid-1970's.
Selected works were taken from his two series with the titles Hokusai's Walk and Carneval di Venezia as well as single works from various work periods of this artist. His preferred issues for etchings includes both landscapes and landscape associations, which Janssen combines with plant and animal structures, and his own facial features.
Ekaterinburg is the «last stop» of the IFA - exhibition, that has toured worldwide for 19 years, including calls at major European, Asian and South American cities. In the past 2 years, the exhibition toured in CIS countries, including Belarus, Ukraine and Armenia.
