May


In May Russia is celebrating two important official public holidays - Spring and Labor Day (earlier known as International Workers' Day) on May 1st, and Victory Day, (9 May) when Russia celebrates the victory over Nazi Germany, while remembering those who fell in order to achieve it.

On these days many outdoor and sport events are held:

Annual Citywide Event The May Walk


It is a traditional procession when students of Ural universities are marching past from the Ural State Technical University (UGTU-UPI) to Square of 1905 and back. For that event Lenina Prospect is usually blocked by the road police.

Youth Sport Games
 

Before the school holidays many sport events intended for teenagers are usually organized:

International women’s volleyball tournament on the First President of Russia Boris Yeltsin’s Cup

The Museum Night
 

This annual city-wide event is traditionally held in Ekaterinburg in May.

Twenty one museums and community centers participate in the Museum Night - History Museum of Ekaterinburg Electric Transport, Art Gallery Pararam, the Regional Natural History Museum, the Gamayun Center of Folk Arts and Artistic Handicraft, Ekaterinburg History Museum take part in the event.

The opening ceremony traditionally takes place near the Ekaterinburg Museum of Fine Arts.


V-Day Celebration and The Military Parade - May 9th
 

Russia celebrates Victory in Europe Day a day later than the rest of the world as it was early morning on May 9, 1945 in Moscow when the Soviet Union and its allies signed the Act of Germany's Military Surrender outside Berlin.

A variety of festive takes place in Ekaterinburg within the scope of Victory Day celebrations.

The Victory Parade on the Square of 1905 is always the central event of the day. The parade consisted on two parts - the historical and the contemporary sections. Over 1,000 Russian servicemen of the Ural garrison dressed in the modern military uniform and uniform of WWII years march across the square in columns.

After a spectacular fireworks display provided the final salute at Victory Day festivities. Guns are fired during a salute at Victory Day ceremony in 3 main spots - Square 1905, Oktyabrskaya Ploshad, and Mayakovsky Central Park of Culture and Rest.

May Stroll
 

At this day cyclists and rollers ride along central streets of Ekaterinburg.

A night rally assemble experienced rollers and usually last from late evening until morning. The total length of the route is about 25 kilometers.

Cyclist also organize Test-Yourself Pedestrian-and-Bike Outing. Any citizen or city guest irrespective of his or her age or fitness level is qualified to participate.

The cyclists are free to choose a 25 or 50 km route either in Nizhne-Isetsky or in Uktussky Woodland Park, and finishing at the Khimmash Machine Building Plant's ski lodge.
