The Ekaterinburg Museum of Fine Arts

The museum has two buildings that are located at the heart of the city — the rebuilding mansion of the XVIII century on Voevodina street in the Historic Center (“Istorichesky Skver”) and the former shop building of the modern style on Vaynera street.
In the main hall visitors may enjoy the world famous Kasli mouldings (traditional kind of cast-iron sculpture in the Ural) and examples of Russian arts and crafts, bright examples of Russian and western painting. Museum is famous also for its Kaslinsky Cast Iron Exhibition Hall. Every year the museum holds approximately 50 replaceable exhibitions, including works of young artists of Ekaterinburg and Ural artists of standing reputation.
The second building of the museum on Vainera street has the unique collection of Russian avant-garde of 1910-1920’s includes works of prominent and half-forgotten artists. Visitors enjoy folk popular prints of the “Jack of Diamonds group” artists such as Ilya Mashkov and Pyotr Konchalovsky, artists of Suprematist trend Kazimir Malevich and Olga Rozanova, Neo-Primitivist pictures by Natalya Goncharova and Mikhail Larionov.

The Regional Natural History Museum

It is one of largest and oldest museums of the Ural. Acts as a scientifically-methodological centre for the museums of the Middle Ural. It actively cooperates with museums of the neighboring regions. The museum has four main exhibition halls: the main hall of the Regional Museum, the Historic Exhibition, the Nature Museum and the Radio Museum by Popov.
The main hall on Malysheva street is situated in the former merchant Poklevsky’s mansion. Here the typical interior of a mansion of the XIX century is reconstructed. Among permanent exhibitions — Ekaterinburg in the XIX-XXth centuries, history of Ekaterinburg and exhibition of Ural icons.

The Historic Exhibition

The historic exhibition located at the Lenina Prospect near the Iset Hotel. Here you may see the famous Shigirskaya Kladovaya and Shigir Collection of the oldest wood sculpture in the world — the Shigir Idol that was found near Nevyansk and estimated to be made about 9,000 years ago. Among permanent exhibitions — the memory hall of the Romanov family and the ancient history of the Ural.

The Nature Museum

The Nature Museum has a rich collection of 60 000 exhibits that represents the main phases of the Ural nature development. Located in a former building of a forging shop. Famous for the displays of a malachite’s monolith (weight — 500 kg) and a mammoth’s skeleton.

The Museum of Art History and Industrial Engineering of Ural

Located in the Historic Center of Ekaterinburg on the place where a metallurgical plant used to stand. Combines 5 monuments of industrial architecture of the second half of XIXth century: timber-drying plant's shop, storerooms, plant bureau, city walls remains and a turnery workshop wall. The museum has 3 permanent exhibitions: "Stone Belt", "The history of the Ural industrial engineering" and "The history of city planning".

The Radio Museum by Popov

The Radio Museum by Popov situated in the former mansion of priest Levitsky. Levittsky was a relative to Alexandr Popov, the inventor of the radio. The museum has a large exposition of radio sets including rare specimens. The only planetarium in the Ural region is situated in the building of the museum.

Ekaterinburg History Museum

Situated at the historic building that was erected in 1820. The museum has the unique database on city planning of Ekaterinburg during the end of the XIXth — the beginning of the XXth century. It also has a large collection of historical images and photos of Ekaterinburg in the XVIIIth — XIXth century. Halls of the museum represent the reconstructed interior of the largest private library of the Old Ekaterinburg.
Among rare displays are: original photos, documents and books of the XIXth-XXth centuries, old coins, works of famous Ural artists such as Ernst Neizvestny and Misha Brusilovsky. The museum has a number of branches: so-called “the Metal Shop” that situated in famous water-tower on the City Dam. It is opened only in summer. The second branch of the museum — the Museum of Photography “The House of Metenkov”.

The Museum of Photography The House of Metenkov

The only state museum of photography in Russia. Main expositions are: history of Ekaterinburg and the Ural region during the XIXth-XXth centuries. Visitors may enjoy the unique phototechniques from a pinhole camera to projection equipment. One of the museum halls represents the atmosphere and interior design of the old-style photographer's studio. The museum often hosts photo exhibitions of Russian and foreign photographers.

The Museum of History of Stone-cutting and Jeweler’s Art

Located at the Historic Center of Ekaterinburg. The building of the museum is the former Mining drugstore designed by famous architect Mikhail Malakhov.
The exposition includes the examples of precious stones as malachite, jasper, and marble those were made in the XIXth century on the Ekaterinburg lapidary factory. Among them:  the works of the craftsman Nikolay Tataurov and 1,5 meters high vase made of jasper.
The museum often hosts the exhibitions of the Ural precious and semiprecious stones.

The Nevyansk Icon Museum

Private museum. Exposition is formed on the basis of the icon collection of the Nevyansk icon painting school of the XVIIIth-XXth century. Museum also exhibits cheap popular prints of the XIXth century, printed old books and manuscripts of the XVIIth-XIXth century.

The Gamayun Center of Folk Arts and Artistic Handicraft

Situated at the building of the former mansion of merchant Kazanzev near the City Dam. Established on the Base of the Folk craftsmen and mechanical arts association. The word Gamayun borrowed from the Russian folklore and means a bird that protects craftsmen. This museum has a number of works of amateur masters and painters and its own art and creative workshops such as wood engraving, stone cutting and castings.

The Ural Geological Museum

The Ural Geological Museum located in the Ural State University of Mines.
The museum was opened in 1937 and acts as a training base for students of the University and other educational institutions. The exhibition includes more than 80 thousand exhibits presenting the famous Ural minerals and fine examples of geology of the Ural.
In Mineralogical department more than 600 types of minerals and more than 40 thousand exhibits are presented. Among the unique samples is a gigantic crystal of smoky quartz “Malyutka” (Baby). Its weight is 784 kg and height is 170 cm. This is the largest crystal among others being presented in Russian museums.
One of the largest collections of gold and emeralds in the world is presented in the Golden room. This exhibition is one of the greatest sights of Ekaterinburg. The gold nuggets from deposits of the Urals are presented here.
For the first time in the world the museum exhibits a large collection of emeralds from Malyshevsky deposit.

Science & Engineering Museum of Sverdlovsk Railway

Science & Engineering Museum of Sverdlovsk Railway (also - the Museum of History, Science and Machinery of Sverdlovsk Railway Station) occupies building of the first Ekaterinburg Railway Station constructed by architect P.Shreiber in 1878. The Railway Station building still preserves its original appearance.
In front of the museum there are sculptures devoted to professionals who work for a railway: a stationmaster of the XIXth century, railway workers of XXth century and a beautiful conductor holding traditional Russian bronze glass holders.
Among the museum's exhibits: trolley for sleepers, dead-end siding, semaphore and swing-gate.
The museum exposition consists of two parts – historical and technical. The first one covers time period from the steam engine, invented by the Tcherepanovs and construction of the first local railway to present-day means of railway transport and railway facilities. The technical part of the exposition shows main sectors of railway transport system.

The Ural Writers Museum Holding

The number of museums forms the unique historic place called The Literary Quarter (“Literaturny Kvartal”). Located on the block of streets: Pervomayskaya, Proletarskaya and Tolmacheva.


The Reshetnikov Museum

Situated in a mansion that was erected in the XIXth century.
Fyodor Reshetnikov was born in the family of postman. The museum has the unique exposition “House of the postmaster” that includes household goods, winter sledges, postmaster’s uniform and even a stage-coach of the XIXth century.
The literary part of the exposition devoted to Fyodor Reshetnikov’s life and works. Visitors enjoy manuscripts and letters, memoirs and contemporaries’ letters, glimpses of urban life and life of postal officials and coachmen, views of Ekaterinburg, Perm, Nizhny Tagil, and St. Petersburg.

The Mamin-Sibiryak Literary Memorial Museum

Situated in the former Mamin-Sibiryak’s house that was bought by the writer in 1885. Hosts the literary and memorial exposition “Life and works of Mamin-Sibiryak”. The house is turned to museum with restored inner design of the famous Russian prose writer and playwright’s office and his mother’s room. Visitors may see original household goods of the XIXth century including furniture and clothes.

The Ural Literary Life of the XIXth Century Museum

Situated in the mansion where in 1878-1891 years the famous Russian writer Dmitry Mamin-Sibiryak used to live.
Visitors enjoy the exposition devoted to Russian writers, who visited the Ural in the XIXth century. The exposition creates the atmosphere of the spiritual and culture life of Ekaterinburg in the XIXth century.

Pavel Bazhov Memorial Estate

The memorial estate of the famous Ural writer Pavel Bazhov. Here Bazhov wrote many works including his famous “The malachite casket”.
The estate is preserved its unique atmosphere and inner design of the XIXth century — Pavel Bazhov’s office, a dining room and a kitchen have been reconstructed. Members of the Bazhov family gave many original household goods and papers that belonged to the writer. The main exposition is devoted to life and works of Pavel Bazhov.

The Ural Literary Life of the XXth Century Museum

Situated in a new house that presents the copy of a typical mansion of the XIXth century. The first exhibition was opened in 1993 and devoted to the Russian poet Alexander Blok and other poets of the so-called "Silver Century of the Russian Poetry".
Permanent expositions show cultural life and literary society of the Ural in XXth century. At that time many poets and writers lived here. Among them — Pavel Bazhov, Arkady Gaydar and Alexey Bondin. Famous Russian writers such as Vladimir Mayakovsky, Boris Pasternak and Alexey Tolstoy used to visit Sverdlovsk oblast. During the Great Patriotic War, the members of Moscow and Leningrad writer groups were evacuated at the Ural and worked together with Ural authors.
